Catacombs of Paris

Catacombs of Paris

The Catacombs are a network of underground tunnels holding the remains of over six million people. In the late 18th century, due to overcrowding in the city's cemeteries, it was decided to transfer the bones to abandoned quarries beneath the ground. Visitors descend about 130 steps to a depth of 20 meters below ground and walk a route of about 1.5 kilometers. The bones and skulls are arranged artistically and morbidly along the walls, alongside signs with verses and quotes. The atmosphere is cool, dim, and thought-provoking about the transience of life. It is a unique site, different from any other attraction in the city, suitable for those seeking alternative and slightly 'dark' history. It is not recommended for people with claustrophobia or very young children.
