Sainte-Chapelle

Sainte-Chapelle

Sainte-Chapelle is a small but breathtaking Gothic gem located within the Palais de Justice complex on the Île de la Cité. It was built in the 13th century by Louis IX to house sacred relics, including the Crown of Thorns of Christ. The chapel is most famous for its 1,113 stunning stained-glass windows that cover almost the entire wall space and depict scenes from the Bible. When the sun shines through the glass, the space is filled with a magical, colorful light that is hard to describe in words. The structure consists of two levels: the simpler lower level and the more ornate upper level. The atmosphere here is quiet and uplifting, and the place is considered one of the architectural highlights of the Middle Ages. Particularly suitable for lovers of religious art, architecture, and ancient history.
