Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe stands proudly at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, in the Place Charles de Gaulle. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honor his victorious armies, the structure was completed many years later. Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of France, with an eternal flame burning in memory of the fallen soldiers of the World Wars. Visitors can ascend to the top of the arch for one of the most beautiful views in the city, overlooking the 12 avenues radiating from it in a star pattern. The climb involves about 284 steps, but the view is worth the effort. The atmosphere around the arch is lively and noisy due to the heavy traffic in the square. It is highly suitable for military history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a classic Parisian photo opportunity.

Visitor tips

Do not attempt to cross the square on foot; use the underground passage for your safety.
