Pyrgos was the former capital of Santorini and remains one of the most authentic and less crowded villages on the island. It is built on a hill, offering 360-degree views of the entire island and the sea. The village is a labyrinth of steep winding paths, hidden churches, and the ruins of a Venetian castle at the summit. It is much quieter than Oia or Fira, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of local life. You can find small traditional cafes and boutique wineries nearby that offer tastings. The historical architecture is beautifully preserved, showcasing traditional Cycladic design. It is the best spot for those looking for peace, history, and a slower pace of life.
