Φορτέτζα Ρεθύμνου

The Fortezza is a massive Venetian star-shaped citadel built in the 16th century to protect Rethymno from pirates and the Turks. It sits on Paleokastro hill and is one of the largest Venetian fortresses ever built. Inside the walls, you can explore the Ibrahim Han Mosque (originally a cathedral), the Governor's house, and several stone-built warehouses. The castle offers 360-degree views of the town of Rethymno and the Cretan Sea. It is a sprawling site with plenty of open space, making it great for a relaxed walk away from the narrow streets of the old town. The bastion views are particularly stunning at sunset. It is suitable for families and history lovers alike.

Visitor tips

Look for the open-air theater inside, which still hosts cultural events during the summer.
