Gorges de Franchard Trail

Located in the iconic Forest of Fontainebleau, the Gorges de Franchard trail offers some of the most dramatic geology in the Paris basin. This loop takes you through a landscape of massive sandstone chaos, narrow passages, and high viewpoints overlooking the forest canopy. The area has been protected since 1861 and was a favorite subject for Barbizon school painters. The trail is well-indicated with yellow markings and provides a sense of wildness that is rare near a capital city. The atmosphere is quiet and shaded, with the scent of pine needles in the air. It is suited for hikers who enjoy varied terrain and rocky lookouts. The trailhead starts at the Parking des Gorges de Franchard.
